PARK AGENCY UPDATES and miscellany (updated about the 15th of August)

STATE PARKS - Frank Padilla, Jr.

  • General trail work included: Nicholas Flat Trail, Ranch Center Rd, and Baldwin Hills
  • State required trail maintenance crew leader training will be offered this fall.  Contact the Trails Council for more information.
  • Willow Creek Trail received some attention during an Amgen team building event.
  • FEMA has already approved part of the damages by winter rains and work has begun on the staircase beaches.  The $77,000 for Pt. Mugu should come soon.
  • Deadhorse trailhead reroute is going through the permit process.  The immediate climb will be made less severe.
  • Permit process continues for improvements to Trippet, Los Liones, and the Hub.

NATIONAL PARK - Leslie Jehnings

  • A regular Trails Council trail maintenance volunteer scratched his cornea while doing brush work with the NPS.  He wasn't wearing eye protection which is now required.
  • The SMMNRA Interagency Regional Trail Management Plan will be presented to the public this fall.  It covers 775 miles of trails and addresses: usage, status, maintenance, accessibility, resources, dogs, type, ADA, trailheads, BBT camps, etc..  Three alternatives will be offered for consideration.

MRCA - No Report

MISCELLANY -

  • A Backbone Trail fair will be held on November 5 at Peter Strauss.  Come and learn more about our longest and most varied trail.
  • The Trails Council received a donation of books from our good friend Milt McAuley.
  • This summer/fall the Trails Council will complete the View Ridge Bridge grant by providing follow-up brushing, signage, and paint to the bridge we installed in 2000 and 2001.
  • The Trails Council has initiated a business membership.  If you own a business or work for one and are interested in more information please contact us mail@smmtc.org
  • Park agencies have been working with a property owner in Malibu to design alignments across his 750 acre property for the Coastal Slope Trail and Puerco Cyn Trail.
